Woodwork Gifts For
Needlework, Quilting and Sewing Enthusiasts Designed and hand made in New
Zealand by
Janet M. Davies
Welcome to my latest designs with a charming rustic look I created to
enhance your surroundings. No fabric and thread was used as such, but
New Zealand wood has been embellished with items we use in the many
styles of stitching we do. You don't have to stitch them, just buy and
enjoy.
The designs have been engraved (burnt) into the wood with a piece of
hot wire leaving an impression of the design. Then layers of varnish are
applied to seal the wood. The technique is known as Pyrography or Poker
Work and has been done since the Middle Ages.
All pieces are exclusive to JMD Designs.

When sold it is gone. Be quick
I based the design of this dish on paisley fabric designs. Note the two
thimbles among the design.
This dish can hold your sewing bits and pieces, centred on
your dinning room table or you could be attach to your own hanger and hang
on the wall etc.
Made from recycled New Zealand Pine Timber which has been hand turned they will become
a family heirloom.
It has been sealed with layers of varnish.
The dish measures 20 cms (8 inches) across. Edge depth 2 cms (3/4

This dish being from recycled timber it may have a small blemish/s in the timber that
adds to its natural charm.
Celtic Stitching Note
this is a unique one-off dish.
When sold it is gone. Be quick
I based the design on this dish around a Celtic knot design. They
some times remind me how a thread twists and turns on itself. Among the
knots you will find buttons, beads, needles, thread and cotton reels. This dish can hold your sewing bits and pieces or centered on
your dinning room table etc.

What is Pyrography
(how the design was put onto the wood)
This craft has been done on timber since the Middle Ages when hot
metal pokers were heated in a fire and then designs burnt into
timber. A new poker had to be used every couple of minutes once the
heat released itself from the tool into the wood.
Bowls, drinking goblets, kitchen utensils and furniture
etc were embellished.
These day a hand held metal wire with a cool handle is continually
heated and the design is burnt into the wood by hand.
Unlike stitching if you make a mistake while burning you can not
unpick the mistake. So a steady hand and concentration is needed
Other Facts About The Pieces
- The thimbles and plaques are made to order so please allow two
weeks from ordering before they go in the post. International
postage takes approximate a week.
- All pieces are made from New Zealand timber from sustainable
forests.
- All pieces are varnished (sealed) so will pass
through international customs easily.
- Because the round dishes are made from recycled timbers
they have quirks in them formed in the environment or from
previous use. But all timbers used are strong and sturdy. There
are no overly out standing blemishes.
- The plaques, thimbles and pincushion bases are made from
new timber.
All pieces are exclusive to JMD Designs. All pieces are designed and hand made in New
Zealand by
