Knitted Fingerless Gloves Tutorial

Written and Designed by Janet M. Davies

The back of my hands get cold in the winter when I'm stitching, typing and driving the car. So I knitted the gloves below that still allow me to have grip at my fingertips while doing things.

I don't like to spend to many hours knitting so I used a chunky wool that knits up quickly. I love bright citrus colours so the Shepherd's - Colour 4 Me Twist, was perfect.

- Main wool: Shepherd - Colour 4 Me Twist - Merino Chunky

- 6.5mm (10 1/2) needles. Cast on 30 stitches.

1. Work band of K2, P2 rib for 3cm (1 inch) with plain coloured wool.

2. Work 12cm (4 ½ inches) of stocking stitch with multi coloured wool. Finishing with a purl row of knitting.

3. Work 1 row of plain coloured wool in K.

4. Work band of K2, P2 rib for 3cm (1 inch) with plain coloured wool.

5. Cast off.

6. Knit another piece the same as above.

7. Sew up side seams leaving a gap of 3cm (1 inch) just below the top band for your thumb to sit through later.

I knitted the glove as above instructions. Then I hand stitched 3 Lazy Daisies along the lower edge of the inner glove area. Then I stitched a yellow cross in the centre of each daisy. Do not stitch too tight to allow for stretch of the glove while it is being worn.

I placed the daisies so they were not on the underneath part of the wrist while worn so they are less likely to get caught on objects.

I also made a pair with the pattern instructions above but put a row of cable down the glove. The Cable is a 3 stitch twist. It has been 20 years since I had done any cable knitting so the You Tube website was wonderful to get video reference to remind me how to do it. Cable is a lot easier to do than it looks. If you can do plain knitting then cable will be your friend.

Here with these gloves you can see the top right hand photo is just a rectangle of knitting; no shaping at all. I cast on 30 stitches and knitted 2x2 stitch rib pink bands. The silver is basket stitch which is 5 stitch blocks of 5 plain and then 5 purl knitted for 5 rows and then the opposite for another 5 rows and then repeated.

Below is the same knitted in lavender wool.

Above is knitted in a 3x3 rib. I did the opposite rib pattern in the silver area compared to the pink bands.
