This is my first ever Halloween design/project. Halloween has not been a big thing in New Zealand but has become more popular the last 15 years. I used to look on it as something those in the USA did.

The project here I have added magnets to the back of and attached to my refrigerator.
Or you could attach some string to the back and hang it on the wall or similar.

Click on the design left to enlarge. Then save to your computer and resize in a word document to the size you wish.

The width of the design I used was 9 cm (3 1/2 inches)

NEEDLEWORK FABRIC PREPARATION
1.
Cut a piece of orange cotton fabric (quilting fabric is perfect) so it is 1 inch larger all round the edges of the design area.
2.
Centre the needlework design under the fabric and trace on the design using a blue water soluble pen or light pencil. If your design can not be seen through the fabric to trace; hold the fabric/paper up to a window to trace.

NEEDLEWORK STITCHING
1.
The lines for the words and the ghost outline and face is Back stitch with 2 strands of black 6 stranded cotton.
2.
The lines inside the ghost body is Back stitch with 1 strand of black 6 stranded cotton.

BORDERS
1.
Cut purple fabric 1 1/2 inches wide at random lengths and sew together to form fabric strips. Sew strips around the outside of your orange fabric.
2.
Repeat as above and sew around the edges of the border just attached.

QUILTING
1.
Cut a piece of wadding the size to the outer edge of the first border.
2.
Cut a piece of backing the size to the outer edge of the first border.
3. Centre and layer the wadding and backing layers together onto the back of the needleworked fabric.
4. Tack all the layer together.
5.
Quilt in 1/8 inch out from the edge of the ghost body with
2 strands of medium purple 6 stranded cotton.
6.
Quilt in 1/8 inch in from the edge of the orange fabric seam line with
2 strands of medium purple 6 stranded cotton.
7.
Quilt in 1/8 inch in from the edge of each individual piece of purple inner border with
2 strands of medium orange 6 stranded cotton.

EMBELLISHMENTS

1.
Sew at random 2 orange and 2 purple buttons on the inner purple border.
2.
On the inner purple border sew orange beads spaced about 1/2 inch apart.

EDGING
1.
Place the right side of the project downwards. The outer border overhanging from the front is folded over twice and slip stitched to the back of the backing fabric.
2. Option #1 Glue some magnets onto the backing.
3.
Option #2. Cut down a bamboo skewer 1/4 inch shorter than the width of the total project. Whip stitch onto the back of the project 1/4 inch down from the top edge of the border. Then attach a piece of thread onto each end of the skewers to use as a hanger.
