Fabric Puff Tutorial
Similar to Yoyos and Suffolk Puffs
Designed and Written
 by Janet M. Davies

The bag measure 28 x 26 cms(11 x 10 inches). The fabric puffs measure 4.5 cms(1 3/4 inches).

I have called this a "Fabric Puff" as a Yoyo and Suffolk Puff have the edge of the circular fabric turned is 3mm (1/8th inch) before stitching the running stitch thread.

1. I traced around the edge of a cookie cutter to get my circle shape. Make a circle twice the width you want your puff to finish up.

2. Hand stitch a row of running stitch 3mm (1/8th inch) in from the cut edge. Start and finish the thread without knotting and leaves tails. Start and finish on the right side of the fabric.

3.
When making your running stitch make each stitch length the same length so when thread is pulled the edges will gather up evenly.

4. Gather up your running thread and tie off the tails of the thread against the fabric.

5.
Push down on the puff so the centre gathering sits as flat as possible.. Do not iron the puff.

6. Place the puff gathered hole upwards onto your background fabric. Sew a bottom so it covers the gathering.

7. Optional: Because this puff was being put on a bag that some days may get a hard life I glued the underneath of the puff to the bag after the button was sewn on. This will help the puff sit against the bag and the sides not stick out on silly angles. The pink circle shows the area I put the glue. Don't push hard on the puff after the glue has been put, on as you don't want it to soak through to the front of the puff. Also glue before you line the bag.

The instructions in JMD Designs retail pattern packs are a lot more
detailed than what is given here in this tutorial above.
