Free Canvas Tutorial

Written and Designed by Janet M. Davies

All design photos have been designed and stitched by Janet.

Painted
Needle Cases
Below the 5 stitched pictures are of Needle Case fronts. Each is approximately 8 x 5cm (3 x 2 inches). Also shown is some of the painted canvas before it was stitched on.

They are stitched on 12 count canvas that has been painted with Acrylic paints. 2 paint colours that compliment the colours in the stitching threads have been used in each canvas piece.

No 'fabric medium' has been added to the paint as the canvas (project) is not washed at any stage. The acrylic paint can be painted directly onto the canvas with a brush.

Anchor Pearl 5 Multi thread has been used in the stitching, but 6 strands of the stranded Multi thread could be used as an alternative.

Single colour Achor Pearl 5 has also been used but this could be replaced with 6 strands of the stranded cotton thread as an alternative. Or 6 strands of Marlitt thread.

Anchor lame' thread has been used to highlight the designs. The metallic thread looks 'dirty' in some of the photos because of the reflection of light from the scanner.

A variety of Canvas Embroidery stitches have been used in the stitching of the Needle cases. www.jmddesigns.co.nz

Decor Bags
These
below are "decor bags". They are called decor as they are not used as a carry bag as such. They are used as decoration around the home. Either hung from a door handle, or placed on a plate stand on a shelf or hung on a wall.

Each bag inside is lined with a patchwork fabric that compliments the paint and thread used. The same types of threads were used as the needle cases above.

The back of the bag is left unstitched so the painted canvas can be seen in its full.

A hand made twisted cord is stitched on the edge of the bags. A tassel has been made from the ends of the cord.

Each is approximately 8 x 5cm (3 x 2 inches) in size.

Other Canvas stitching

This mini pin cushion is 10cm (4 inches) square. I used 12 count canvas stitched with
Anchor Lame'Metallic thread, Anchor Silk threads, Anchor Multi Pearl thread and Marlitt Rayon thread.

Above is a photo of a hand woven miniature kete (kit) flax bag. I stitched a band and a front plate on canvas. The kete bag is about 10cm (4 inches) square. I used the Anchor Multi Pearl cottons along with silver metallic thread and silver beads.
Design copyright 2006.

I used 14 count canvas tile stitched with Anchor Lame'Metallic thread, Anchor Multi Pearl variegated thread and Marlitt Rayon thread. Design size 8cm (3 inches) square.

I used 18 count canvas painted with Semco Acrylic Paints and then canvas style stitching was added using
Anchor Pearl cotton, Anchor Lame'Metallic thread, Anchor Multi Pearl thread and Marlitt Rayon thread. Feathers and beads were added for texture and appeal. Design size 30cm x 26cm
