Ladybug
Below is the drawing to use for the ladybug as you wish
for your stitching. I have used it above as hand turned applique. But
the line drawing below could be used bigger or smaller in so many styles
of needlework. If you wish to Buttonhole stitch the edges of your
applique and not needle/turn as I have you can find a Buttonhole stitch
tutorial here.
For using the ladybug for Applique, below is a
quick look at what I did.
- Trace individual pieces off the
main drawing; add seam allowance to all pieces and allowing for where
the bits sit under each other.
1. The pink body background is one large
piece, appliqued all as one.
2. The yellow wings are appliqued next in 2
pieces.
3. Blue circles are appliqued next. The method I
use to make a 'round' circle is here.
4. Stitch the feelers with Stem
stitch. The edges of design components are Stem stitched around. Use 1 strand of
Pearl 8 cotton (or 4 strands of 6 stranded cotton).

Save the above drawing to your computer. Reduce or enlarge for what you
want to use the butterfly for. My ladybug measures when finished10 cms
square (4 inches square)

For using the butterfly for Applique, below is a
quick look at what I did.
- Trace individual pieces off the
main drawing; add seam allowance to all pieces and allowing for where
the blue bits sit under the body and the body sits under the head.
1. The yellow wing background is one large
piece, appliqued all as one.
2. The blue wings are appliqued next in 4 pieces.
(trace the veins onto the blue fabric before appliqueing in place.)
3. The body and then head is appliqued in
place.
4. Pink circles are appliqued next. The method I
use to make a 'round' circle is here.
5. Stitch the veins/feelers with Stem
stitch. The edges of design components are Stem stitched around. Use 1 strand of
Pearl 8 cotton (or 4 strands of 6 stranded cotton).
Save the above drawing to your computer. Reduce or enlarge for what you
want to use the butterfly for. My butterfly measures when finished. 28 x
23 cms (11 x 9 inches)

Toadstool
For using the toadstool for Applique, above is a
quick look at what I did.
- Trace individual pieces off the
main drawing; add seam allowance to all pieces and allowing for where
the green centre piece sits under the cap and the stalk.
1. Attach the green centre piece first to
your background fabric. (trace the radiating lines onto the green fabric before stitching
the green centre in place.)
2. The cap is appliqued next in 1 piece.
(trace the circles onto the fabric before stitching the cap in place.)
3. The stalk edges are then appliqued.
(trace the inner lines onto the fabric before stitching the stalk in place.)
4. Blue circles are appliqued next. The method I
use to make a 'round' circle is here.
5. Stitch around the edge of the main
design components with Stem
stitch. Also the radiating lines in the green centre. Use 1 strand of
Pearl 8 cotton (or 4 strands of 6 stranded cotton).

The instructions in JMD Designs
