The tiki is a Maori design that in modern times depicts good luck. Originally the tiki was thought to represent the first man or to symbolise Maori womanhood along with her ability to bear children. The tiki is most commonly carved from pounamu (greenstone) and worn as a pendent around the neck.
The top wall hanging is a Tiki appliqued with a quilted background of sea, ferns, stars and sun, 36x28cm (14 x 11 inches). If you do not wish to quilt the background design it could be stitched on the surface of the light blue fabric. Hand dyed fabric was used for the tiki and background. The Border is a printed fabric of Paua shell.Pictured above left is a placemat of a quilted Tiki, 20cm (8 inches) wide. This design would look equally as good as a pot stand or on the front of a cushion or bag. It could be done as a stitchery also.
Pictured also is a small Tiki Stitchery wall hanging, 14cm (5 1/2 inches) wide. The front design could also be used as a small bag front suitable for carrying your cell phone and credit cards. The design is perfect to pop in an A5 envelope for sending overseas or making into an actual postcard. Another option is to adhere some magnates on the back and put on the fridge door. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. See the exchange rate here
