Maori Bone Carvings Applique
Wall Hanging
and Pillows etc Top Hanging Total Size:122 x 64cm (48 x
25inches).
Above are variations you can make from the top wall
hanging pattern pieces.
The Eternity Wall Hanging (left) is 33 x 64cm (25 x 13 inches).
These applique designs are based on New Zealand Maori Bone Carvings. Each of the
above carvings are commonly worn as pendants. Like all Maori design they each
tell a story. The meaning or beliefs of the designs can vary between each tribe.
The grouping of 3 lines in the actual carving represents bring united:
Whanau (family), Hapu (sub-tribe) and Iwi (tribe). In the designs shown the
bone carving is appliqued onto a background. Then it is Buttonhole stitched
around it's edge. The carved design and lettering is hand stitched. The
borders can be quilted. All of
this can be machine stitched if you wish.
Looking at the top wall hanging photo: Energy:
This is represented by a Mania that has a bird like head and fish tale.
It some times has a human body.
This carving represents the energy of ones spirituality. The carving design
is made from many things combined just like a combination of things that
make our spirituality.
Growth: This is shown by the Koru(s) (fern frond) in the centre
unfurling. Our lives are
like the koru that slowly unfurls as we grow mentally, physically and
spiritually; bringing tranquility and peace.
Strength:
Represented by the traditional fish hook
(Hei-Matau). The strength relating
to the strength needed by Maui in the Maori legend who pulled the
North Island of New Zealand from the ocean. Also it is said to bring luck
and safety to those traveling over water and traveling. Eternity: This is represented by a
twisted formation. Different amounts of twists in a design mean
different things. With the amount of twists shown above it represents eternity.
The eternity a couple will spend together. Also it can represent the many paths in
life we take.
