Quilts and Needlework as Gifts
Below is some Stitching, Quilting and Applique etc
I have given as gifts or made for myself.

After confessing to be a zipperphobic I had a play with a zip that is hand stitched in place like in the tutorial in the blog listed here: http://quiltsalott.blogspot.com/2010/03/little-purse-tutorial.html  I only had a short zip in among my stash so it is only a small coin purse size. I hand stitched a small flower on the front of the purse before I put the zip in place.

Then I had a play with sewing in a zip by machine and then hand stitching the purse lining to the inside of the zip. It all went well and I feel more confidant now with zips.

Above is a mixture of Needlework and Applique that will be made into a bag front.
It is 18 x 25cm ( 7 x 10 Inches). I designed it as a "Tree of Life". It depicts life growing with doves of peace, hearts showing love growing, leaves for new growth and circles of sun for light. I made some of the parts uneven as it shows that life is not always perfect.

These hexagons were hand sewn together using paper templates. Each hexagon measure 2.8 cm (3/4 inche). The whole hexagon panel was then appliqued onto the front of a black bag. I top stitched by hand the plain coloured hexagons. Also I made a small pouch to put my business cards in that will live in my handbag.

This bag is 18cm (7 inches) wide. The front is strips of fabric that have been woven together and then added into the front construction of the bag,

A bag I made for my Mum's birthday for her Library books. 42 x 36cm (17 x 14 inches) The front is blocks with curved seams. Circles are appliqued onto the blocks. The back is rectangular pieces of fabrics with circles appliqued along the centre seam line.

Each needle case has beads sewn around the edge of it and felt pages inside. The lining of the needle cases are the same fabric used for the matching pincushion.

Felt pages inside.

Pincushions decorated with hand stitching and beads.

Mum's Teacup Quilt

Pictured above is my Mum with the lap throw I made her April 2009 for her birthday.
The back is lined with polar fleece and no batting.

The throw before the backing was attached. The triangles towards each corner are folded squares inserted into the dark blue border strip.

Squares of plaid fabric were top stitched by hand onto the centre of each background block. On 8 of the squares cupcakes were hand stitched.

Peace Symbol Bag with Dove and Hearts

The Peace Bag front is 21cm (8 inches) wide. The peace symbol and the hearts are appliqued onto the background fabric with hand stitched Buttonhole stitch edges. Beads have also been added between the spikes of the Buttonhole stitch on the peace symbol. Single beads have been added to the centre of each heart  Fusible webbing was used to adhere the applique shapes to the background fabric. The inner bag is lined with pockets. On the back of the bag the peace dove is hand quilted. The bag walls have a layer of batting inserted. The edges of the bag have hand made bias binding.

Paua and Gumby Cat Throws

Paua throw     leopard and tiger trow

Throws I made for my Children for Christmas 2008 (pictured before backing was added. I really like how the 2 colour depths (light/dark) used give the illusion of different sized alternate blocks. Each is just under the size of single quilts.

Quilted Koru Placemat

Koru Placemats. 21cm (8 inches) wide. The design has been hand quilted.
Hand made bias binding was used for the edges. The quilting was done using
2 strands of 6 stranded embroidery cotton.

Pot Stand or Mitt, 26 cm square (10 inches)
English Piecing with cardboard templates
